Yahoo announced earlier today in a press release that Yahoo! co-founder Jerry Yang will become the new Yahoo! CEO.

SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 18, 2007 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News
Network/ — Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO), a leading global Internet
company, today announced that the Board of Directors has appointed
Jerry Yang, Yahoo! co-founder and long-time board member, as Chief
Executive Officer. Terry Semel, current Yahoo! Chairman and CEO, will
assume the position of non-executive Chairman and serve as an advisor
and important resource for the company’s senior management team, while
also working closely with the Board. The Board also named Susan Decker,
formerly Executive Vice President and Head of Advertiser and Publisher
Group, as President of the company.

It’s about time! Before being hired by Yahoo!, Terry Semel didn’t even use email, and he seemed proud of that fact. I understand highering someone from the outside to bring in a fresh perspective, but going that far outside wasn’t wise for a company that is ultimately about technology.

I’m a fan of Yahoo!. While everyone is caught up in Google-fever, Yahoo! is silently innovating and producing great products. I hope Jerry Yang can infuse back into Yahoo! that excitment and energy that only a founder can do.
